Springtime and Gardening Journal 2011

It's time for renewal and rejuvenation. Talinn has a new haircut, the plants have started stirring into life, the jasmine is in full bloom, and the citrus trees are fruit laden. We've done a bit of spring cleaning around the house donating massive amounts of books and toys and clothes. The clocks have sprung forward and longer days bring joy to the heart. No doubt this is my favorite season. The delicious fragrance of fresh flowers, new leaves, the promise of warmth, long days, and all the outdoor summer activities. Fun times stretch ahead as we eagerly anticipate and await family visitors in the coming months. We're thrilled to harvest our first crop of mandarins. They're so sweet! If only they were abundant as well. This is our first real crop after nearly four years and the meager five oranges leave us craving for more. But fresh blooms bring fresh promise.Talinn and I kick-started the season by planting anemone flower bulbs in areas of the garden where nothing productive has ever sprouted. Let's see how these bulbs fare.Nothing screams spring more than cheery daffodils. Here's the first one peeking out in our backyard along with the first tulip - all thanks to Nana's early planting efforts. Inspired by our modest success growing vegetables last summer, we've planted some tomatoes, squash, and peppers this year. Nana crafted this fabulous wooden container for the tomatoes to ensure full sun. Also inspired to make an appearance in the slowly warming sun is the almost forgotten bicycle. Talinn is once again riding around and has promised to work on getting rid of the training wheels when he turns 4!
